About Our Fascia Repair Service

Fascia boards run along the edge of your roof, providing a mounting surface for eavestroughs and finishing the look of your roofline. When fascia rots, sags, or pulls away, your eavestroughs fail and water damages your roof structure.

Fascia damage is often caused by overflowing eavestroughs. Water constantly running behind gutters eventually rots the wood underneath. That's why we always check eavestrough drainage when assessing fascia problems.

Depending on the extent of damage, we can repair sections of fascia or recommend full replacement. We also offer aluminum fascia capping to protect repaired wood and prevent future rot.

Fix the Cause, Not Just the Symptom

Rotted fascia usually means eavestrough problems. Before repairing fascia, we check gutters for clogs, improper slope, or leaks that are directing water behind the gutter and onto the fascia board.

Why This Matters for Your Home

Understanding the importance of proper maintenance and quality workmanship.

Eavestrough Support

Fascia provides the mounting surface for your gutters. Rotted fascia means failing gutters.

Roof Protection

Fascia seals the gap between roof deck and outside air, keeping out moisture and pests.

Structural Integrity

Fascia supports the lower edge of roof sheathing. Failure can lead to sagging.

Appearance

Damaged fascia makes the whole house look neglected.

Fascia Repair: Protecting the Edge of Your Roof

What the fascia does, why it rots, the warning signs to watch for and how repairs are done so your eavestroughs stay securely attached.

What the Fascia Does

The fascia is the board that runs along the edge of the roof, fastened to the ends of the rafters or trusses. It closes off the roof edge, supports the bottom row of shingles and drip edge, and (most importantly for many homes) is what your eavestroughs are fastened to.

That means the condition of your fascia directly affects how well your gutters hold up. If the wood is soft, the gutter hangers loosen and the eavestroughs sag or pull away.

The fascia is the vertical board along the roof edge. It carries the eavestrough, closes off the rafter ends and works together with the drip edge and soffit to keep water and pests out.

Why Fascia Boards Rot

Fascia rot is almost always caused by water. The most common sources are overflowing or leaking eavestroughs, ice dams that force water behind the gutter, and missing or poorly installed drip edge that lets water run down the back of the board. Unprotected wood with failing paint absorbs moisture every time it rains.

  • Overflowing or clogged eavestroughs
  • Leaking gutter seams and corners
  • Ice dams along the eaves
  • Missing or damaged drip edge flashing
  • Peeling paint on uncapped wood fascia
How fascia rot progresses
SoundSealed, dry wood→Peeling & dampPaint fails, water soaks in→Rot spreadsSoft wood, gutter loosensCatching it early means a small repair instead of a full replacement
Overflowing gutters and failed paint let water soak into the end grain. Left alone, the softened wood can no longer hold eavestrough fasteners and rot can spread into the rafter tails.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Fascia damage is often visible from the ground if you know what to look for.

  • Eavestroughs sagging or pulling away from the house
  • Peeling paint, dark stains or visible rot on the boards
  • Bent or loose aluminum fascia capping
  • Gaps between the fascia and the roof edge
  • Signs of animals entering at the roofline

How Fascia Is Repaired

A proper repair starts with removing the eavestrough in the affected area so the full board can be inspected. Rotted sections are cut out back to sound wood and replaced with new primed lumber, typically 1x6 or 1x8 depending on the existing profile. If rafter tails behind the board are damaged, they're addressed as well.

The new wood is then protected with aluminum fascia capping to keep water off it, and the eavestrough is re-hung with new hangers on the correct slope.

Repair or Replace the Whole Roof Edge?

If rot is limited to a few spots, targeted repairs are cost-effective. If you find soft wood all around the house, or you're already planning new eavestroughs, full fascia replacement with aluminum capping is often the smarter move. It lets the entire roof edge be done properly at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about fascia repair services.

QWhat is fascia and what does it do?

Fascia is a flat, horizontal board that runs along the edge of the roof, just above the soffit. It's connected to the ends of rafters/trusses and serves as gutter support, protection against weather elements (particularly water), and visual enhancement creating a smoother finish for the roof's edge.

QWhat are the signs of fascia damage?

Key indicators include holes, sagging, and rotten wood (which can become pest entry points), clogs or leaks in gutters causing water saturation, ceiling discoloration from moisture entering through faulty fascia, and visible deterioration like peeling paint or water damage.

QWhat materials are used for fascia?

Fascia is typically made of wood, aluminum, or PVC. Aluminum fascia capping provides maintenance-free protection and is often recommended for repaired fascia or when painting is difficult to maintain.

QWhy is fascia important for my eavestroughs?

Fascia boards are where gutters are installed. A strong fascia board ensures gutters remain securely in place, even during heavy rainfall. Rotted or damaged fascia can cause your entire gutter system to fail, leading to water damage to your home's structure.

QDo you need to remove the eavestroughs to repair fascia?

Usually, yes, at least in the affected section. Removing the gutter allows the damaged wood to be fully replaced and the eavestrough to be re-hung securely on solid material.

QWhat causes fascia to rot?

Water is the main cause, usually from overflowing or leaking eavestroughs, ice dams or missing drip edge. Fixing the water source is just as important as replacing the wood.

QCan rotted fascia cause other damage?

Yes. Rot can spread to the rafter tails and roof deck, let animals into the attic, and cause eavestroughs to detach. Addressing it early keeps repairs smaller.
