About Our Door Capping Service

Door capping wraps the exterior wood trim around your doors with durable aluminum cladding. The result is a maintenance-free, weather-resistant finish that eliminates painting and prevents rot.

We custom-bend aluminum on-site to precisely fit your door frames. Choose from a wide range of colours to match or complement your home's exterior. The finished product looks crisp and professional for decades.

Door capping is often done alongside window capping and siding projects, but can be a standalone service to refresh your entry without a full renovation.

Check Before Capping

We always inspect wood trim before capping. Capping over rotted wood just hides the problem temporarily. If rot is present, we'll recommend repair or replacement first.

Door Capping: Protecting Exterior Door Frames for the Long Term

What aluminum door capping is, why wooden door frames break down, how custom-bent capping is installed and what to check before your frames are covered.

What Is Door Capping?

Door capping (sometimes called door wrapping or trim cladding) is a layer of aluminum that is custom-bent to fit over the exterior wood trim and brickmould around a door. It shields the wood from rain, snow and sun so it no longer needs painting, and gives the entrance a clean, crisp finish.

Because every door frame is slightly different, the aluminum is measured and bent on-site with a brake so it fits each piece of trim precisely.

Why Wooden Door Frames Deteriorate

Door frames are exposed to more water than most parts of a wall. Rain runs down the door, splashes up from the step and collects at the bottom corners of the frame. In winter, snow piles against the threshold and melts repeatedly. Over time paint cracks, water soaks into the end grain and the wood begins to rot, usually starting at the bottom of the side jambs.

  • Peeling or cracked paint that keeps coming back
  • Soft or spongy wood at the bottom of the frame
  • Gaps between the frame and the siding or brick
  • Drafts and water getting in around the door

Inspect for Rot Before Capping

Capping should never be used to hide rotten wood. If aluminum is installed over damaged trim, the rot continues underneath, unseen, and can spread into the framing and subfloor. Before any capping goes on, we check the trim and brickmould for soft spots and replace damaged sections with sound material.

This step is what separates capping that lasts for decades from capping that has to be torn off after a few years.

How Door Capping Is Installed

A well-executed capping job looks like it came from the factory. It relies on accurate measurements, careful bending and good sealing at the joints.

  • Measure each piece of trim and brickmould around the door
  • Repair or replace any rotted wood
  • Bend aluminum on-site to match the exact profile
  • Fasten with colour-matched trim nails
  • Seal joints and edges with exterior-grade sealant
  • Match colours to windows, siding or trim

After any rot is repaired, aluminum is bent on-site to fit the frame exactly, then sealed so water sheds away instead of soaking into the wood.

Pair It With Window Capping

If your door frames are showing wear, your window frames are usually not far behind. Capping doors and windows together keeps the colour and finish consistent across the whole exterior and is more efficient than doing them separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about door capping services.

QCan door capping be done in any colour?

We offer a wide range of standard colours. Custom colours can be ordered for an additional cost and lead time.

QWill capping hide existing rot damage?

We don't cap over damaged wood. If rot is present, we'll repair or replace the trim first. Capping over rot just delays the inevitable.

QHow long does door capping take?

A typical door takes 1–2 hours. Most homes can have all doors capped in a single day.

QDoes capping change the appearance of my trim?

Slightly. The aluminum adds about 1/16 inch of material, and the profile may differ slightly from your original wood trim. Most homeowners prefer the finished look.

QDoes door capping stop drafts?

Capping with properly sealed joints can help reduce air and water getting in around the exterior trim. Drafts through the door itself are usually a weatherstripping or door-fit issue, which we can point out during the visit.

QCan you cap a door frame that has some rot?

Yes, but the rotted wood must be repaired or replaced first. Capping over rot traps moisture and allows the damage to keep spreading out of sight.

QWill I need to paint my door frames after capping?

No. The aluminum has a baked-on finish, so the capped trim doesn't need painting. An occasional wash keeps it looking clean.
